Sleep Apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a common sleep disorder characterised by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These interruptions, known as apnoeas, can last from a few seconds to a minute and may occur multiple times throughout the night. The most common type, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), occurs when the muscles in the throat relax excessively, blocking the airway. Symptoms of sleep apnoea include loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, daytime fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Untreated sleep apnoea can lead to serious health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Treatment options range from lifestyle changes, like weight management and avoiding alcohol, to medical interventions such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, dental devices, or surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for managing symptoms and improving overall health and quality of life.

Researchers to Study Link Between Cardiovascular Disease and Sleep Apnoea

With cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death globally, this new study aims to investigate its link with obstructive sleep apnoea, a condition affecting around a billion people. Led by Professor Peter Cistulli and a team of experts in cardiology, respiratory and sleep medicine, and cardiac imaging, the study will utilise MRI technology to provide definitive evidence of the relationship. The research could lead to personalised treatment approaches, potentially reducing premature deaths associated with both conditions.
