Walgett Aboriginal medical Service
37 Pitt Street (PO Box 396), Walgett NSW 2832
The Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service (WAMS) offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including GP clinics, preventative health screenings, chronic disease management, child health and immunisations, dental care, family health, sexual health, mental health support, drug and alcohol counselling, and antenatal and postnatal care. WAMS was the first Aboriginal Medical Service in New South Wales to achieve accreditation with the National Quality Improvement Council (QIC) and the State Quality Management Service (QMS) in April 2001, reflecting its commitment to delivering professional healthcare on par with or exceeding mainstream services.
Established in June 1986, WAMS serves the Walgett community and is dedicated to treating all individuals in the area. The organisation adheres to legislative and corporate regulations to ensure the highest quality of care. As an Aboriginal Medical Service, WAMS prioritises community support, employment opportunities, staff training, and the promotion of excellence in healthcare delivery.
The roots of Aboriginal Medical Services in Australia trace back to Redfern in 1971, where the first AMS was founded through donations from non-Aboriginal advocates of Aboriginal rights, including judges, ministers, teachers, and church leaders. Their efforts arose from recognising the inadequate health services available to Aboriginal peoples. Today, there are over 100 Aboriginal Medical Services nationwide, continuing the legacy of accessible and culturally sensitive healthcare.
